New funding boost for pupils with SEND – NNPCF Steering Group Statement

March 6, 2017

The NNPCF Steering Group welcome the Department for Education’s announcement on Saturday morning (4th March 2017) of £215m to help local authorities create additional places and improve facilities in all schools across the country.

The NNPCF co-chairs were involved in confidential conversations with the Department for Education to agree how to co-produce the use of these funds locally and to ensure that local authorities have enough time to plan with local partners to improve schooling for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

The NNPCF steering group are delighted that a key condition of the money is that local authorities are expected to work with local parent and carer groups to determine how the money can be most effectively used.

We recommend that parent carer forums should contact their local authorities to start conversations to co-produce these decisions and communicate this information with their membership.

Sherann Hillman MBE (Co-chair and North West representative) and Maureen Morris (Co-chair and North East and Cumbria representative) of the NNPCF steering group said:

“To make sure this money makes the best possible difference to families with disabled children and young people, it’s vital that local authorities work in partnership with them so they provide the services that families actually want and use. Parent Carer Forums –  networks of parent carers across the country – can help ensure this happens by working strategically with local authorities, Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and others to make sure the views and opinions of families directly influence the services that affect them.”

Edward Timpson has written today to Directors of Children’s Services and to Regional Schools Commissioners to set this announcement in the wider context of strategic planning for SEN – and a copy of the letter can be found here.
