NNPCF Co-Chairs meet the new Under Secretary for the Department for Education
January 31, 2018
Yesterday NNPCF co-chairs Maureen Morris and Mrunal Sisodia met with the new Minister for Children and Families Nadhim Zahawi in one of his first external meetings in his new role.
We introduced the Minister to the work that parent carer forums do and discussed the role of forums across the country in co-producing with services to improve the outcomes for children and young people with SEND. We shared with him parent carer forums’ view that the changes introduced by the Children and Families Act were the right changes and that whilst good progress had been made, we were far from finished. The reforms have high aspirations that haven’t yet been met and against a backdrop of tightened resources we need a renewed focus.
We also raised a number of key issues that members have been highlighting to us (including the feedback we got from you at our conference in November): as we come out of the implementation phase of the SEND reforms, we asked him to focus on the quality of EHCPs, meeting the needs of those pupils on SEN support and the provision of Preparing for Adulthood services. We highlighted joint working across agencies and strong leadership in local areas as the key factors underpinning success.
The Minister committed to continue to work with the NNPCF and accepted our invitation to meet with local forum members in the future.
