Preparing for adulthood – Meeting with the Department for Educaiton
July 21, 2016
The NNPCF and Special Needs Jungle were invited to attend a meeting with the Department for Education on Tuesday 12 July in London to discuss preparing for adulthood (PfA), in the context of implementing the SEND reforms set out in the Children and Families Act.
This was focused around the four PfA outcomes in the SEND Code of Practice, namely:
- employment and training;
- independent living;
- community participation;
- and good health.
*A second meeting with parent carers is to be held in Sheffield.
Parent carers were delighted to be asked to discuss these issues face to face with Department for Education officials. Among those attending were parent carers from Parent Carer Forums in Havering, Lewisham, Richmond and Kingston, Croydon, Sutton, Hackney and Hertfordshire along with the two NNPCF Steering Group members for London.
We had a really good exchange based on experiences in local areas and about the issues in terms of the operational and strategic challenges faced. We also considered possible resources for parent carers and gave some feedback on those and look forward to continuing the dialogue with the Department on these very important issues that are at the heart of improving aspirations and delivering better life outcomes for all children and young people across all areas of life.
